The perception of the events happened hundred years ago in St Petersburg, Russia, changed several times in Russia.
During the Soviet times it was an imminent victory of communism, next stage of society development after capitalism. After USSR collapse, Russian authorities considered revolution as a huge disaster for entire nation. Current government is now willing to talk about it at all. There are no such topic in mainstream news.
I think it’s one of the most important event in 20th century that shook not only Russia or Europe, but entire world. After it workers from all over the world factories received limited working day, weekends and sick leaves. Turnover in Russia lead to the concept of social justice and most countries introduced taxes to redistribute wealth from rich to poor. It was clear, that much better to spread small amount of money to exterminate extreme poverty than to loose everything in chaos of rebellion. Absolute power in most countries were replaced with “check and balance” system where nobody can make a crucial decisions on their own.
In Russia itself consequences of revolution are still palpable. After short shift to democracy in 1990s we returned back to regime with free medicine, education but lack of political pluralism. Putin’s idea is to restore soviet style system combined with liberal economic policy. So great experiment in this country, that started hundred years ago is in progress…
