Organs donation

I’ve read today in a book about organ donation in the US. It turns out that they have a special place in driver’s licenses where they can agree to organ donation after death. But the default option in the US is your refusal for donation. As a result, about 20 thousand people are dying every year waiting for the donor. Author of the book, Nobel prize winner advocates changing the default option to an agreement for donation.  It will increase the availability of organs and save thousands of lives.

I decided to check what is going on in Russia regarding this topic. And was very surprised to find out that the default agreement for donation has been acting in Russia since 1992. So doctors could use organs if relatives will not explicitly against it. However, don’t be so happy for Russian patience who need such an operation. In our country, there is no deficit in organs, but in money. The price for such an operation is several million rubles and most people could not afford it. And quota from federal budget is enough for…. about 10 operations a year for kidney transplantation. Compare it with 6 thousand in the USA and you will see the odds to survive.
