Separable verbs consist of a verb and a prefix.
Prefixes are units of language (usually just a few letters long) that are put right in front of a word to modify or enhance the meaning of it.
- abfahren (to depart)
- mitfahren (to come along)
- zurückfahren (to drive back)
Some of the separable prefixes:
- ab- (off), an-, auf-, aus-, bei-,
- ein-, her-, hin-, mit- (with), nach-,
- vor-, weg-, zu-, zurück-(back), zusammen-
In speach stress goes always on prafix: einkaufen
---
Word order
The basic sentence structure in German is:
Subject + verb + object .
This is the same with separable verbs, except that the prefix separates from the verb and moves to the very end of the sentence, without any other changes:
Subject + verb + object + prefix.
- separable verb: fernsehen (to watch TV)
- Ich sehe gern fern (I like to watch TV)
In an auxiliary clause, the verb reaches the end without division.
- Ich gehe jetzt ins bett, weil ich morgen immer schon um 6 Uhr aufstehe .
