Reflexive verbs

For reflexive verbs subject and the object of the verb are the same — in other words, the person does something to themselves:

• sich waschen (to wash oneself)
• sich freuen (to be happy / look forward)
• sich erinnern (to remember)

Verbs conjugation

Word oder

Reflexive pronoun comes right after the verb, unless there's a special word order (like with modal verbs or subordinate clauses). In subordinate clauses the reflexive pronoun stays near the subject, before the verb, the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause

• Ich weiß, dass er sich freut.
• Sie sagt, dass sie sich wäscht.

Past tense

Reflexive verbs always use "haben" in Perfekt — never sein.

Main clause

Subject + haben + reflexive pronoun + past participle

• Ich habe mich gewaschen.

In subordinate clauses

[dass] + subject + reflexive pronoun + participle + haben

• Ich weiß, dass du dich gewaschen hast.
