"Kein" – Negation of Nouns

"kein" is using for negating a noun that would otherwise have "ein" or no article:

• Ich habe ein Auto → Ich habe kein Auto
• Das ist ein Hund → Das ist kein Hund
• Ich habe Geld → Ich habe kein Geld

"Nicht" – Negation of verbs

• "nicht" is using to negate verbs. "Nicht" goes after the conjugated verb or (for separable verbs) before the prefix
  • Ich schlafe → Ich schlafe nicht
  • Das ist teuer → Das ist nicht teuer
  • Er steht auf → Er steht nicht auf

Andere negations words

In German, there are several negation words that express different types of negation.

• immer (always) → nie (never)
  • Er kommt immer pünktlich (He is always on time)
  • Er kommt nie zu spät (He is never late)
• alle (everyone) → niemand (no one, nobody)
  • Alle sind hier (Everyone is here)
  • Niemand ist hier (No one is here)
• etwas (something) / alles (everything)→ nichts (nothing)
  • Ich habe etwas zu tun (I have something to do)
  • Ich habe alles zu tun (I have everything to do)
  • Ich habe nichts zu tun (I have nothing to do)
• mit (with) → ohne (without)
  • Ich gehe mit Jacke (I am going with a jacket)
  • Ich gehe ohne Jacke (I am going without a jacket)
• schon mal (already, at some point) → noch nicht (not yet)
  • Hast du das schon mal gemacht? (Have you ever done that?)
  • Ich habe das noch nicht gemacht (I have not yet done it)
• noch (still) → nicht mehr (no longer, no more)
  • Ich arbeite noch hier (I still work here)
  • Ich arbeite nicht mehr hier (I don’t work here anymore)
• noch (still) → keinen mehr (no more)
  • Hast du noch Hunger (Do you still feel hungry)?
  • Nein, ich habe keinen Hunger mehr (No, I am not hungry anymore)
