Ja-Nein Fragen

These are questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no." The verb is placed at the first position.

With positive question possible answers: ja (yes) - nein (no)

  • Nein, ich kann heute nicht (contradiction)

With negative question possible answers: nein (if you confirm) - doch (ich you not argee)

• Kommen Sie heute nicht?
  • Doch, ich komme heute Nachmittag (contradiction)
  • Nein, ich kann heute nicht (confirmation)
• Hast du kein Auto?
  • Doch, ich habe ein Auto (contradiction)
  • Nein, ich habe kein Auto (confirmation)

Polite asks

In German, polite requests are often formed using questions with modal verbs, the Konjunktiv II (subjunctive II), and indirect questions.

1) Using können (can) or dürfen (may)

• These modal verbs make a request sound softer.
  • Können Sie mir helfen (Can you help me)?
  • Darf ich hier sitzen (May I sit here)?

2) Using würden

• This structure makes the request sound even more polite.
  • Würden Sie mir bitte helfen? (Would you please help me?)
  • Würdest du mir das geben? (Would you give me that?)

3) Using hätten or wären

• These make questions softer and more polite.
  • Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Moment Zeit? (Would you maybe have a moment?)
  • Wären Sie so freundlich, mir zu helfen? (Would you be so kind as to help me?)

4) Using könnte

• This makes requests even more tentative.
  • Könnte ich bitte die Speisekarte haben? (Could I please have the menu?)
  • Könntest du mir helfen? (Could you help me?)

5) Using Indirect Questions

• Indirect questions sound more polite than direct ones.
  • Könnten Sie mir sagen, wie spät es ist? (Could you tell me what time it is?)
  • Wissen Sie, wo die Toilette ist? (Do you know where the restroom is?)
