Prepositions Of Time

Temporal prepositions in German indicate when something happens, and they describe time-related circumstances. Here are some common temporal prepositions and their uses:

• Am Montag besuche ich meine Großeltern (On Monday, I visit my grandparents)
• Am 1. Januar feiern wir Neujahr (On January 1st, we celebrate New Year)
• Wir treffen uns am Abend zum Abendessen (We meet in the evening for dinner)
• Der Zug kommt um 14 Uhr an (The train arrives at 2 p.m)
• Das Meeting beginnt um 9 Uhr (The meeting starts at 9 a.m)
• Ich habe sie um 2004 kennengelernt (I met her around 2004)
• Im Sommer fahren wir ans Meer (In summer, we go to the sea)
• Im Januar ist es oft sehr kalt (In January, it is often very cold)
• Im nächsten Jahr werde ich mehr Sport treiben (In the next year, I will exercise more)
• In drei Tagen habe ich Geburtstag (I have a birthday in three days)
• In der Zukunft möchte ich im Ausland leben (In the future, I would like to live abroad)

1) ab = from (+ Dative)

now --- |ab====>

• indicates start of a specific time period in future
  • Der Zug fährt ab 9 Uhr.
  • Ich arbeite ab Montag.

2) von / vom = from

|ab====>

• indicates start of a specific time period in the past or in general
• with years, seasons, months, days, general daytime, time (no artikle): von is used
• with dates and spesific datime (with artikel): vom is used
  • Ich arbeite von 9 Uhr bis 17 Uhr (I work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Ich habe vom 09.04 Urlaub

3) bis / bis zum = to (indicates end of a specific time period)

• refers to something that happened before a specific time or an event
• with years, seasons, months, days, general daytime, time (no artikle): bis is used
• with dates and spesific datime (with artikel): bis zum is used
  • Ich arbeite bis 18:00 Uhr.
  • Der Kurs dauert von Montag bis Freitag
  • Ich arbeite bis zum 30. April.

4) vor = before/ago (+ Dative)

• refers to something that happened before a specific time or an event
  • Vor dem Essen wasche ich mir die Hände (Before eating, I wash my hands)
  • Vor der Arbeit trinke ich einen Kaffee (Before work, I drink a coffee)
  • Vor einem Monat war ich im Urlaub (A month ago, I was on vacation)

5) nach = after (+ Dative)

|nach====> ---- now

• used for events that occur after a certain point
  • Nach dem Essen gehe ich spazieren (After eating, I go for a walk)
  • Nach der Arbeit fahre ich nach Hause (After work, I drive home)
  • Nach dem Regen scheint oft die Sonne (After the rain, the sun often shines)

6) seit = since (+ Dative)

|seit====>now

• refers to an action or state that began in the past and continues in the present
  • Seit einem Jahr lerne ich Deutsch (I have been learning German for a year)
  • Wir wohnen seit 2015 in Dresden (We have been living in Dresden since 2015)
  • Seit zwei Tagen funktioniert mein Computer nicht (My computer hasn't been working for two days)

7) zwischen = between

• used to indicate a time frame or interval
  • Ich arbeite zwischen 9 und 10 Uhr an meinem Projekt (I work on my project between 9 and 10 o'clock)

8) für (for) + Akk

• When indicating how long something lasts, "für" often emphasizes the span of time something is done.
  • Ich plane, für eine Woche nach Spanien zu reisen (I plan to travel to Spain for a week)
  • Das Ticket ist für zwei Stunden gültig (The ticket is valid for two hours)
